CUPW members, including local, regional and national executives, joined thousands of demonstrators gathered on Parliament Hill and across the country on Thursday, December 4 to show support for a coalition Government.

Although Harper managed to put the government on hold until the end of January and avoided a confidence motion set for Monday, which would have likely toppled his minority government, the rally message was clear: Postal workers and a majority of Canadians and Quebecers don’t trust the Conservative government with our economy.

Our chance to mobilize members and allies

Between now and the end of January, the powerful and wealthy Tories will to try to win the hearts and minds of Canadians and Quebecers. They will try to convince us that the Conservative party’s economic policies are the way out of our economic crisis. In the meantime, while Harper tries to save his job, it is workers who will suffer the real impact. That is why support at all levels of the union is essential.

Postal workers do not trust a government that springs surprise attacks on women, workers and public services.

Why weren’t they honest about what their real intentions were before the election?

Keeping up the pressure

During the government shut down we must work with our community allies to send a clear message to Harper and the Conservative government that we don’t like surprises, that we are not alone and that we won’t let them bully women and workers.

Finally, let’s not forget one important thing:  Harper’s departure would be the best thing that could happen to protect our public and universal postal service.

We must support a coalition alternative that respects workers.
