National Convention Date Moved to October 24-28, 2011 – The Struggle Continues

September 3, 2009  -  17:00

Convention 2011 / Bulletin

2008-2011/195

At its last meeting, the National Executive Board voted to move the date of the next national Convention. As you probably know, the Convention was scheduled for April 2011.  However, section 3.02 of the National Constitution allows us to bring forward or delay the date of the Convention “should the scheduled timing of the National Convention conflict with the negotiations of collective agreements applicable to a substantial number of members.”

This will inevitably be the situation in 2011, when both Urban and RSMC collective agreements will be expiring, at the end of January and December 2011, respectively.

WE NEED TO BE READY

The union has been fighting for several years to keep our universal public postal service.

Right now, we have to carry out this struggle simultaneously on several fronts: politically, in terms of Canada Post’s Strategic Review; technologically, with the changes brought on by the Modern Post, and in collective bargaining, to protect our pay and working conditions. Moving the date of the national convention will help us carry out our work more effectively and plan for the challenges that await us is the coming negotiations.

THE STRUGGLE CONTINUES

Today, we are faced with two competing visions of the post office:  one is Canada Post’s, based on profits; the other is the union’s, based on public service.  But we know we hold the key to success in this struggle, and that is  involving you, our members, and ensuring public support.

WE NEED TO WORK TOWARDS THIS GOAL ON A DAILY BASIS,

AND ALWAYS BE READY, BECAUSE

THE STRUGGLE CONTINUES.

In solidarity,

Denis Lemelin
National President
