December 6^th is the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women.

Violence against women is rampant.

It is estimated that between 17- 38% of women have women have experienced physical assaults by a partner.

Violence affects the lives of millions of women worldwide, It impedes the right of women to participate fully in society.

Violence against women takes a dismaying variety of forms including murder, spousal abuse, rape, sexual harassment, bullying, child marriages and female circumcision.

Until all women in Canada have true economic and social equality, ending violence against women is not possible.

Women cannot be safe as long as there is inadequate funding for women’s shelters, and there is little funding for ongoing anti-violence education in the schools.

This is why CUPW has joined with the CLC, other Unions and Federations of Labour to send Prime Minister Harper 20 post cards covering issues such as public services, good jobs, safety for immigrant women, child care, and increased funding for women’s shelters.

If you receive a package of these cards please send one on November 16^th, and every day after that until December 6^th.

You are also encourage to participate in December 6^th activities that are occurring in your community.

By these actions we can send Harper a message that we want and need real changes to build a safe world for both women and men.
