Take the Pledge – Make March 11th, 2010 A Bottled Water Free Day

March 4, 2010  -  16:00

Environment / Bulletin

2008-2011/253

Did you know?

  • It takes more than 17 million barrels of oil to produce the 31.2 billion litres of bottled water consumed in the USA.
  • Bottles water is between 240 and 10,000 times more expensive than tap water.
  • Across the globe, the marketing of bottled water has led to diminished confidence in public water services.  This has led to a significant increase of the privatization of water resources.
  • The bottled water industry encourages us to think of water as a commodity that is privately owned and sold as a profit.
  • In this country, 25% of bottled water sold is actually reprocessed tap water.  Much of this reprocessed water is sold by PepsiCo (Aquafina) and Coca Cola (Dasani).
  • In the case of reprocessed tap water, we are being sold something we have already paid for through our municipal taxes – quality tap water.

Water is essential to life.  Bottled water turns this necessity into a commodity.

On March 11, 2010, all CUPW members are encouraged to celebrate bottled water free day.

On March 11, 2010, join with people from sea to sea to sea by turning on the taps and pledging not to drink bottled water where public water is available.

You can take the pledge and get additional information by going to: www.bottledwaterfreeday.ca.

Take another step towards supporting the environment and strong public services.  Say no to bottled water.

In solidarity,

Denis Lemelin
National President
