Dear Ms. Greene:
I am writing to ask that you publish all strategic planning documents relating to Canada Post’s long-term vision and plans for our public post office. As a rightful owner of Canada Post, I have a right to know what Canada Post is planning, and to have my say.
Canada Post is a Crown corporation, it is owned by the public, and operated for the benefit of all of us. Our public postal network connects communities throughout this vast land, helping us to overcome differences and distances. It plays a key role in our social and economic life by providing jobs and the infrastructure that healthy communities need to thrive and businesses need to grow. That is why we need to safeguard the integrity of our public postal service.
There are many signs pointing to major change at Canada Post. I am very worried. For instance, you announced in August the closure of the mail sorting plant in Quebec City. We now know that closure was decided months before the announcement, despite Canada Post’s obligation to give notice before a final decision.
Because transparency opens the door to democracy, while secrecy stops it at the boardroom doors, I support the call for Canada Post to make public the following documents before May 15, 2006, at midnight (EDT):
all documents relating to the review of the national postal network announced by Canada Post on July 14, 2005;
all other strategic planning documents that consider changes to our public postal service, including post offices, postal facilities and jobs; including all minutes, letters, studies, and scenarios, whether as part of a financial, operational or forecasting exercise.
I think these documents should be provided in full, and not be altered in any way. Until these documents are made public, I support the call for a complete stop to any project to close facilities, reduce postal services or downsize personnel.
In the event that these just and reasonable requests are not met, I declare my support for direct, non-violent action to obtain the documents.
