The Canadian Union of Postal Workers and Canada Post have reached an agreement to address the safety issue of RSMC Members not being visible when delivering mail on their routes.

On April 10, 2006 the parties signed a Memorandum of Agreement which indicates that Canada Post will provide vehicle signs, emergency lights and reflective strips to all Rural and Suburban Mail Carriers.

The vehicle signs are reflective and the word “contractor” has been removed. The signs are to be fastened to the top of the vehicle with the attached rubberized magnets and two safety straps, which are to be inserted through the windows of the vehicle. The use of these signs will be mandatory.

The emergency light is to be fastened, with the attached magnet to the top of the vehicle on the rear left-hand side. This yellow flashing light is to be plugged into the cigarette lighter receptacle. The cord is quite long and can be inserted through the back window, under the seat or beside the console and then inserted into the lighter receptacle. This light will assist in improving the visibility of your vehicle and the use of the light will be mandatory.

If your vehicle does not have a lighter receptacle or the magnets will not adhere to your vehicle, please inform your Local Union Representative in order to have the issue addressed with Canada Post.

There will also be reflective strips available for you to use. There will be three different types of strips that will be offered. A magnetic type, a stick-on adhesive type and a type that uses static to stay fastened. The use of these strips will be optional.

As indicated in the memorandum of agreement, the parties have also agreed that the cost of these safety measures that are being provided by Canada Post will not be taken out of the Financial Cap.
