Blow the whistle on Canada Post’s secrecy!

July 14, 2006  -  10:38

Operation Transparency / Fact Sheet

Canada Post is reviewing its national network and has announced plans to close the mail processing plant in Quebec City as the very first step in its review. This decision was made without any consultation or input from the community, the public and the unions which represent the workers.

The consequences:

  • Instead of being processed locally in Québec City, the public’s mail will be trucked three hours away to Montréal and spend another three hours being trucked back.
  • 270 positions in CUPW will be permanently eliminated. 160 temporary workers will be affected. Loss of $12 million annually to the Québec local economy.
  • 27 members of the Union Postal Communications Employees (UPCE) will be declared surplus.
  • 22 supervisors will be declared surplus.
  • Other non-union managerial personnel, such as engineers are affected.

Which other postal facility in the national network may risk being closed next?

How many jobs will be lost?

How will our public postal service be affected?

What are the long-term goals for Canada Post?

We want to know!
