Calgary – The Canadian Union of Postal Workers (CUPW) is hosting a public forum on the future of public
postal services in light of Canada Post’s recent announcement to invest 1.9 billion dollars in capital
expenditures to modernize the post office.
“Canada Post is promoting a vision of modernization that includes much more than some new plants and
equipment,” said CUPW National President Deborah Bourque. “They’ve been speaking to the customers that they
believe are important – the largest businesses in the country – to link modernization and deregulation
together.”
“We want to open the debate to the larger Canadian audience,” said CUPW’s Calgary Local President Robert
Scobel, “they’re the real shareholders of Canada Post, who believe the public post office should continue to
include a universal, affordable and accessible service for all and provide good jobs throughout the
country.”
The forum is an opportunity to ask questions and discuss the ideas and needs of Calgarians who use the
postal service and share ideas about what a modern post office should look like.
It takes place Tuesday night, January 22nd from 7:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at the Hillhurst
Sunnyside Community Centre 1320-5 Ave NW.
