Dear rural mailbox owner:

Canada Post representatives will soon be in your community to talk about your mail delivery. They may tell you that you can no longer have roadside mail delivery because your mailbox cannot be delivered to safely. They may not even take the time to talk to you and explore options before moving your mail delivery to a community box, green box or a post office. Put simply, Canada Post may take a decision about your mail delivery without your input.

We believe the workers who deliver the mail and the communities they deliver to should be involved before Canada Post takes a decision to stop home delivery.

We believe Canada Post should be working on solutions to delivery problems with rural residents as well as local union officials who represent rural delivery workers and who have first-hand knowledge of the safety and delivery problems within a community.

In some cases, the solution to an unsafe mailbox may be as simple as moving the box to a safe delivery location. Of course, in other cases, it may not be that simple. There is a chance that it will not be possible for Canada Post to keep delivering to your mailbox if there is no safe way of dealing with problems. Having said that, there are solutions to many problems and many actions you can take to ensure that Canada Post consults with you before taking a decision.

 

What can you do?

• Contact your local post office. Ask when your roadside mailbox will be reviewed and demand input.

• Call or write your mayor, councilor and federal member of Parliament. Tell them to:
  
  • Take action to stop Canada Post from making a unilateral decision about your mail delivery.
    
  • Insist that Canada Post consult with residents and representatives of rural delivery workers.
    
  • Ask Canada Post to explore all options before moving mail delivery from roadside boxes to community boxes, green boxes or post offices.
