Billboards Slam Cannon on Postal Deregulation

September 24, 2008  -  10:47

Strategic Review of Canada Post / Media Release

For Immediate Release

Hull-Gatineau – Two large billboards that are critical of Lawrence Cannon’s position on postal deregulation are going up today. One in downtown Gatineau and another in his riding.

The Canadian Union of Postal Workers (CUPW) has invited other federal election candidates in Gatineau, Hull-Aylmer and Pontiac, the media and members of the community to view the unveiling of the first billboard at the corner of Boulevard Maloney and Rue Bellehumeur in Gatineau at 12:30 p.m. today. The second billboard will appear on Highway 50 in front of exit 159 which leads to Buckingham.

“Close to 70 per cent of the general public do not want Canada Post’s letter market opened up to private sector competitors,” said CUPW National President, Denis Lemelin.

CUPW has sent eleven letters requesting a meeting with the Minister since he was elected but the Minister has been unwilling to meet. The union hopes the billboards will move Cannon to meet with the union if he is re-elected and also reconsider the Conservative position on postal deregulation.
