CUPW and the Union of Postal Communications Employees – Public Service Alliance of Canada (UPCE-PSAC) have
joined forces on a campaign to deal with an unparallelled assault on public postal service and jobs.
Our objectives:
- Ensure Canada Post does not destroy hundreds of temporary jobs and thousands of positions in the course
of reviewing and modernizing its operations.
- Stop the privatization of Canada Post Call Centres and the National Philatelic Centre, as well as the
elimination of over 300 jobs.
- Ensure our public post office shares the benefits of postal modernization with the public by preserving
and improving public postal service and jobs in communities across the country. At the moment, Canada Post
intends to use all the productivity gains from its $2.5 billion modernization initiative to cut thousands of
jobs and save millions annually. From our perspective, there is no good reason why the management of a public
institution such as Canada Post should assume all the benefits of modernization.
What your local can do
In the first stage of the campaign, CUPW is asking locals to:
- Form joint CUPW- UPCE committees where possible
- Contact allies and community groups. Ask them to pass two resolutions:
- One protesting the service and job cuts at Canada Post and urging the government to consult with people
to develop an improved Canadian Postal Service Charter.
- Another endorsing a socially responsible vision of Canada Post, as outlined in the People’s Postal
Declaration.
- Meet with municipal representatives with a view to getting municipalities to pass the resolutions.
- Form job creation/service expansion committees to identify areas where post offices should be opened and
where door-to-door delivery could easily be extended.
To date, we have targeted 13 CUPW and PSAC-UPCE locals that are most affected by the cuts to jobs and
positions: Edmonton, Ottawa, Winnipeg, Antigonish, Fredericton, Halifax, Hamilton, Kitchener, Moncton,
Montreal, Scarborough, Toronto and Victoria. However, the union is encouraging all locals to participate in
the campaign. Most locals will be affected as Canada Post rolls out its modernization’s plans.
