Canada Post recently notified the union of its plans to eliminate 560.5 full-time and 119 part-time
positions in Winnipeg, Halifax, Hamilton, Montreal, Quebec-Randin, Saskatoon, Saint John, and Toronto. This
brings the total of positions destroyed over the next few years due to employer programs linked to
modernization (ie. Postal Transformation, Process Consolidation and the National Network Review) to about
1050 full-time and 200 part-time. And there are more cuts to come if Canada Post has its way.
In addition to eliminating positions, Canada Post is also cutting services by eliminating rural mailbox
delivery, closing post offices and removing street letterboxes.
CUPW has grave concerns about the course that Canada Post is charting for the future.
The current course will dramatically affect your work and working conditions, sometimes in very negative
ways (See fact sheet called Canada Post’s plans for the future and you at http://www.cupw.ca/index.cfm/ci_id/12163/la_id/1)
The job and service cuts will hurt hundreds of communities across the country that are already struggling
to preserve local economies.
CUPW believes that our public post office should share the benefits of modernization with the public by
preserving and improving public postal service and jobs. At the moment, Canada Post intends to use all the
productivity gains from its $2 billion modernization initiative to cut jobs and save $250 million
annually.
Support for sharing the benefits
To date, about 250 municipalities have signed our People’s Postal Declaration which calls on Canada Post
to share the benefits of postal modernization.
