In every round of negotiations, it’s important to have clear and accurate information to focus the debate
and make well-informed decisions. This is even more important in crucial negotiations such as these. Here is
what we plan to do in the coming weeks to fully explain our demands.
Video Blog
In recent weeks, we’ve been producing a video blog. It involves a short presentation on the Union’s
activities around negotiations. In these videos, I provide an update on one or two issues. As negotiations
move forward, this video blog will deal with a more varied range of issues and will take on greater
importance as a firsthand source of information. You can view the video blog on the Union’s Website at: post-this.cupw.ca.
Proposal for the Future of Canada Post
Today, we will be posting on line and mailing to all locals our proposal to secure the future of
Canada Post. This proposal takes into account the challenges associated with the need for Canada Post to
operate on a self-sustaining financial basis and its social responsibility as a Crown Corporation, as well as
the need to expand services to the public and maintain decent jobs. All in all, our approach is very
different from Canada Post’s. The paper is available at: http://www.cupw.ca/1/2/5/1/8/index1.shtml.
Fact Sheets
The Union will once again be producing fact sheets in this round of negotiations to fully explain the
members’ demands and its position. It’s important to remember that we negotiate based on our demands, not the
employer’s proposals. These fact sheets will deal with issues such as: job security, service expansion,
harassment and human rights, pension plan and benefits. They will be available in all locals as they are
produced. These fact sheets will give you an opportunity to discuss issues with members of your Local
Executive Committee and your stewards.
An Informed Member is an Involved Member
As President and Chief Negotiator, I firmly believe that an informed member is an involved member. We will
provide you with all the information you need to fully understand what is happening at Canada Post. Our
future is at stake and it concerns each and every one of us. Together, we will decide our future.
The struggle continues.
In solidarity,
Denis Lemelin
National President and Chief Negotiator
