The Sector is responding to the development of large multi-national corporations, including some privatised postal administrations that are becoming major world players in their own right. Electronic globalisation and the development of e-commerce also pose challenges for the Sector. 
The number one priority is organising and helping affiliates with recruitment But the Sector also closely monitors developments at the World Bank, International Monetary Fund and the World Trade Organisation for fall out from their policies on the postal industry and its staff.

It was established, along with other Federations of Labour, after the creation of the Canadian Labour Congress in 1956, to further the aims and objectives of its affiliated unions.

The Federation speaks on behalf of and represents the interests of organized and unorganized workers. It promotes decent wages and working conditions, improved health and safety laws and lobbies for fair taxes and strong social programs. It works for social equality, and to end racism and discrimination.
