Forty-two percent of Canadians aged 16-65 do not have the literacy skills required for full participation in the knowledge economy. The National Literacy Secretariat (NLS) works to promote literacy as an essential component of a learning society and to make Canada's social, economic and political life more accessible to people with weak literacy skills. It works in partnership with the provinces and territories, other government departments, business and labour, the voluntary sector and non-governmental organizations to build capacity for literacy opportunities across Canada.

Writing Out Loud was written as a final report requirement in 1997 for a provincially and federally funded literacy and life skills project called Chapters. Five years and over 1000 copies later, Writing Out Loud has expanded into a fully published book, an exciting online training program and the framework for a variety of writing workshops. Says Tamara Levine of the Canadian Labour Congress: "Writing Out Loud is a wonderful set of resource books for literacy instructors who want to encourage their participants to gain confidence and express themselves in writing."
