In Memoriam: Brother Clément Morel, Montréal, Québec

September 19, 2001  -  11:59

In Memoriam / Perspective

It is with deep regret that we inform CUPW members of the death of Brother Clément Morel, a prominent CUPW leader and activist from the 1960s to the 1990s. He was most noted for his famous quote, "The employer is a bastard and very, very dangerous!"

Brother Morel was an activist in the Montréal Local in the early days of CUPW. By 1969, he was elected as 2nd Vice-president of the local. He served as National Director for the Québec Region and later, the Metro-Montréal Region from 1972 to 1990. For a brief period in 1986, Brother Morel served as the Québec Regional Grievance Officer.

Brother Morel had a reputation as a tireless worker and played a leading role in transforming CUPW into a militant union in the struggle against threats of automation and government in the 1970s.

Brother Morel is survived by his wife Denise, his son Gilles, a daughter-in-law and two grand children.

Brother Morel will be greatly missed by friends, family, co-workers, and his union brothers and sisters.
