Over 1,000 women, men and children attended the event protesting against funding cuts for Status of Women Canada (SWC), changes in the terms and conditions of the Women’s Program at SWC and the elimination of the Court Challenges Program.
Over 430 organizations have signed a declaration that condemns Prime Minister Harper for failing to live up to his election promise to “take concrete and immediate measures, as recommended by the United Nations, to ensure that Canada fully upholds its commitments to women in Canada.”
An aboriginal women’s drumming group opened the protest
Many at the rally also protested the Conservative government’s decision to cancel a federally funded child care program
The protest fell on December 10, which is Human Rights Day
Union members, representatives from organizations and the public attended the protest
Protesters marched from the Supreme Court to Parliament Hill
Protesters filled Stephen Harper and Bev Oda’s phone mailboxes with support messages for women’s equality
