Canada Post belongs to you

September 10, 2010

Canada Post is investing $2.5 billion in new equipment and methods. In this time of economic restraint, we have to make sure the investment is a good deal for you. You deserve to share in the benefits of modernization and efficiency. The savings must be reinvested and shared with the public and the postal workers. After all is said and done, it’s still the workers who make your postal service strong.

Petition to the House of Commons - Moratorium on Post Office Closures

November 5, 2009

Petition to the House of Commons WHEREAS the federal government is allowing Canada Post to close public post offices in spite of a moratorium on closures in rural and small towns. WHEREAS the government expects Canada Post to inform people at least one month prior to closing, moving or amalgamating their public post office and explore options that address people’s concerns WHEREAS a month is an inadequate amount of time for a whole community to discuss a closure and explore options. WHEREAS public post offices connect communities throughout this vast land, helping us to overcome differences and distances. WHEREAS public post offices play a key role in our social and economic life by providing the infrastructure that healthy communities need to thrive and businesses need to grow. We call on the Government of Canada to instruct Canada Post to maintain and improve its network of public post offices and to consult with the public, their elected representatives, postal unions and other major stakeholders to develop a uniform and democratic process for making changes to this network.

Action Request: Send letters to MPs – Help Defeat Bill C-44

October 15, 2009

In June 2009, the federal government introduced Bill C-44, an Act to amend the Canada Post Corporation Act (virtually identical to Bill C-14). If approved, this bill would partially deregulate Canada Post by removing international letters from Canada Post’s exclusive privilege to handle letters. Bill C-44 is currently being debated in the House of Commons. The single most important action you can take to help defeat Bill C-44 is to contact your member of Parliament (MP). CUPW has produced a letter to MPs on Bill C-44 and a leaflet which explains Bill C-44 in the context of the Canada Post Corporation Strategic Review.

Hey Harper - Hands off my post office!

October 15, 2009

Last year, the federal government conducted a very quick and quiet review of our post office called the Canada Post Corporation Strategic Review (CPCSR). The government did not hold public hearings during the CPCSR and is not consulting with the public on CPCSR report recommendations. The CPCSR report, which was released in April 2009, recommended against postal deregulation, but with the exception that international letters be removed from Canada Post's exclusive privilege to handle letters. The government accepted this recommendation in June 2009 when it introduced Bill C-44.

Resolution: Save Public Post Offices and Rural Delivery

July 22, 2009

WHEREAS the report of the Canada Post Corporation Strategic Review (CPCSR) recommends that the current moratorium on post office closures in rural and small towns be replaced with a mechanism involving new rules and procedures, including the ability to replace public post offices with private outlets. WHEREAS the report also recommends that rural mailbox delivery be reconsidered. WHEREAS these recommendations, if implemented by the federal government, would undermine public postal service and jobs in our community and fundamentally change the nature of Canada Post’s retail and delivery network. WHEREAS the report proposes that Canada Post’s highly inadequate community consultation process be used when closing or “rationalizing” a post office/outlet and that a similar process be used when replacing rural mailbox delivery with delivery to a community box, green box or post office.

Petition to the House of Commons - Remailers and Moratorium on Post Office Closures

June 25, 2009

WHEREAS the federal government is considering ending the current moratorium on post office closures. WHEREAS the federal government has introduced legislation to legalize the activities of remailers, which will erode the revenues of Canada Post Corporation needed to maintain its current Universal Service Obligation. WHEREAS our public post office plays a key role in our social and economic life by providing the infrastructure that healthy communities need to thrive and businesses need to grow. We call on the Government of Canada to maintain the moratorium on post office closures and withdraw the legislation to legalize remailers. We also call upon the Government of Canada to instruct Canada Post to maintain, expand and improve postal services.
