September 13, 2007 - 09:00 Pension / Bulletin 2005-2008/289 During the most recent Pension Advisory Council (PAC) meeting which took place on June 28, 2007 members of the Council were advised that all pension seminars would be cancelled for the rest of 2007. These very important seminars are offered to all employees who are within 2 years of retirement. This allows employees to better prepare for their retirement. The contractors who facilitate the seminars are quite costly.
Bargaining Unit PositionThe topic of pension seminars has been on the agenda of the PAC for years as reported in my reports to the National Executive Board. The bargaining units (CUPW, UPCE, CPAA) have, on a consistent and ongoing basis, taken the position that the Unions offer education seminars on pensions on a regular basis. We have pointed out that Union facilitators could do the pension training for much cheaper than the contractors. CPC has always turned us down. The end result is that employees approaching retirement have now been left out in the cold after having spent in many cases a majority of their lives working at CPC. Are we engaged yet?
Union EducationThe bargaining units have trained facilitators who can facilitate retirement seminars and CPC should be using these resources instead of costly contractors. If there is a need for retirement seminars in your Local, contact your Shop Stewards and Local Executives. CUPW has updated course material available to be used at all levels of the Union. We also strongly suggest that one does not wait until the end of their career to participate in a pension seminar. Our retirement needs to be planned years ahead of us actually retiring; financially, emotionally, physically, and with the full participation of our family especially our partners.
THE STRUGGLE BEGINS WHEN WE ARE BORN AND NEVER ENDS
